Moss Terrariums

Terrariums

Winter is coming … and before it gets here, I want to be sure to have a little bit more green in my house.  We live in an area surrounded by trees.  During spring and summer, we have long months surrounded by gorgeous green hills.  Everything feels so alive!  Then there’s fall, when the trees really put on a show.  And then comes winter, and the leaves are gone until spring.  Every winter I seem to miss the color green a little more.

So this year, there will be a little extra green right there on our coffee table, where I’ll be sure to see it daily.  Because we have cats, I went with terrariums.  This way the plants have built in force fields to protect themselves, and there’s the bonus atmospheric bit where they recycle their own water.  I can enjoy them all the time without having to fuss over them.

I Am Legend Terrarium

The smaller terrarium with horses is filled with moss from my own yard.  The larger one (a cookie jar from Walmart, $7) contains moss and lichens from adhocstock on Etsy.  I’ve ordered from her before (terrariums are a great gift for kids!) and she ships a wonderful assortment of beautiful, healthy plants.  Just for fun, I added an Empire State Building souvenir and some tiny deer, creating my own tiny version of I am Legend.  I think I’m better prepared to face the lack of green outside now.

Four of Seven Couch Pillows

In other news, I’ve now completed four of seven couch cushions.  Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Hot and Cold Half Square Triangle Pillow

Time to Quilt

After a LOT of quilting, the second of ten couch pillows has been completed!  This pillow pattern is also from the fabulous book Pillow POP!  I’m used to making half square triangles that use value to create design, but this one uses a difference in warm and cool colors.  I wasn’t really sure how it was going to work out, but I do love the result!

Two Pillows

My pillow forms are a little larger than those used in the book and I also used smaller half square triangles, so the look is a little different.  I also quilted this one very, very heavily, as I expect it to be the one that sits behind my husband most often.  He’s not really gentle with handmade things, so it needs to be tough.  Extra quilting means extra strength!

And now my couch pillow project is on pause because my lovely niece has asked for my help in a very worth quilting project.  I think the fabric will arrive this afternoon, so the timing of this finish was perfect!

Red Flower Pillow

Red Flower Couch Pillow

I’m replacing the smooshed back cushions of my couch with big, colorful, quilted pillows.  This morning I finished my first one, a huge red flower made from some of the scraps from my Lava Meets Sea quilt.

Red Flower Pillow Close Up

Next up is another design from Pillow POP!, Crystallized by Angela Mitchell.  I’m calling my version “Hot and Cold” because instead of using value in these half square triangles, colors are separated into warms and cools.  I have so many greens that look warm to me, so in my mind I’m sorting red, orange, yellow and pink or blue, purple and green.

Starting Hot and Cold Pillow Cover

My pillow forms are huge and I decided to downsize the half square triangles.  That means extra work, but I hope it will also make a seriously cute pillow cover.  We’ll see, lots more to sew!

Just Keep Stitching …

Kaori's Hugs and Kisses Quilt Top

This weekend I finally finished Kaori’s Hugs and Kisses quilt top!  I tried to keep it “flowery” while throwing in lots of other fun prints.  And I do love sunshine through a quilt top!

Light Through Kaori's Hugs and Kisses Quilt

This morning I pulled out the new-but-vintage sheet I meant to use as backing so I could pop it in the wash before taking it to the quilt shop.  Just then I realized that the quilt is a block too wide for this sheet.  Arg!!  I really love the backing sheet, too, a sweet sky blue with white and yellow daisies.  Now to decide between shopping or using another backing I have on hand, navy blue with white circles.  Hmm.  It’s not the look I intended, but the circles and deep, calm blue might make a nice contrast to the sharp edges and riot of color on the front.

This morning I also started stitching down the petals on my big flower pillow top.  Hopefully the rough edges of the applique will ruffle up and hide my very imperfect stitches.  Because GEESH.

Stitching Pillow Petals

As with every other project, I’ll just keep stitching and see how it turns out!
