There was a status update going around on Facebook last week to “Pay it Forward in 2011” by sending something handmade to the first five commenters sometime during the year. I decided to jump right in and used my leftover tumbler blocks from a work in progress quilt to make this pillow slipcover. (The fabric is Moda’s Bliss, so aptly named!)
I even had a few left for the back.
I hope it will make a nice surprise for my friend!
I love this idea. I can’t wait to start my own bliss tumbler quilt. How did you cut your tumbler pieces out? I’m thinking of buying this tumbler template.
Hi, Brandie! It’s really easy to make your own template if you use charm squares. Just take the cardboard square from the back of the package and trim the top in at an angle an inch on each side to make the tumbler shape and use it as a template. (Cut carefully because it’s really easy to cut through your template too, but you can do three or four squares at a time this way.)
It’s explained much better here: http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/09/sweet-baby-quilt.html
Good luck and I’d love to see your quilt when you’re done!
I love this pillow. I thought it might be a good to make something like this and donate for our school auction. I was wondering how you did the back? It’s such a nice touch.
Hi Michelle! For the back I made some white tumbler blocks and sewed them to the leftover tumblers from the front, then used my rotary cutter to even up both sides. The colorful side was hemmed and the white side was sewn to a larger piece of white fabric, finished in a simple envelope style. Good luck with your auction! :)
Thanks! I’m going to give it a try.
